Bill Haney posted a clip of his son, Devin Haney, working out, fending off repeated slow left hooks from a trainer in what appears to be preparation for a rematch with Ryan Garcia in 2025. Papa Haney said, “No secret what time we on,” which is a cryptic remark about them slogging away, preparing for the second clash.
Haney’s Kryptonite
The left hook Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) repeatedly used to drop Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) was kryptonite in their April 20th clash at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Bill isn’t saying whether Devin will take a tune-up before facing Kingry again, but that would make sense.
Haney, 26, has already been out of the ring for seven months, and he can’t afford to lose out on all that cash that he could earn in a warmup fight before facing Ryan again.
He’s got to get back in action, win back fans, and show that he’s not mentally gone to pieces after what he went through in his three-knockdown, 12-round majority decision loss to Kingry.
More importantly, Haney needs to stay sharp to have his best shot at avenging his loss. Garcia is taking on a tough Japanese fighter, Rukiya Anpo, on December 30th, and that match will help him prepare for a second fight with Devin.
Ryan was kicking Haney’s backside all around the ring last April and making it look so easy. The sad thing was that Devin made zero adjustments to take the left hook away from Ryan, and it wouldn’t have been hard to do.
Neutralizing the Left Hook
- Stop clinching: Ryan caught Devin with his left hook while trying to clinch and never stopped doing this. He didn’t have to come looking for Haney because he was right there every time. This area is what cost Haney the fight.
- Keep his right hand up: Haney could have blocked the left hooks from Ryan if he’d kept his guard up, but he didn’t do it. He was sloppy.
- Stay on the outside. If Devin is on the outside, Ryan won’t be able to land his bread-and-butter shot and will be eating jabs all night.
