Conor Benn Calls Out WBC Welterweight Champion Mario Barrios After Draw With Pacquiao

Conor Benn took to social media today to call out WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios following his controversial 12-round majority draw against 46-year-old Manny Pacquiao last Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Benn’s Lack of Credentials

Conor lacks the credentials to fight for a world title. He’s coming off a loss to Chris Eubank Jr., and his resume at welterweight is that of a novice. Benn has been well-promoted by his promoters at Matchroom, who have yet to match him against a good fighter at 147.

“Barrios, congratulations on keeping your title. If it makes sense, let’s run it next,” said Conor Benn on Instagram, calling out WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios today on Instagram.

It would make sense for Benn to get a world title shot against Barrios if he had victories over contenders like Shakhram Giyasov, Eimantas Stanionis, Devin Haney, and Karen Chukhadzhian. But with Conor’s weak resume, he doesn’t rate a world title shot at 147, even against a paper champion like Mario Barrios.

It hurts boxing, making it look like a non-sport, to have fighters like Benn given title shots after beating no one to earn the fight.

Weakest 147 Champ

Benn obviously saw how vulnerable Barrios (29-2-2, 18 KOs) looked in that fight, getting out-punched by an old-looking Pacquiao at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It wasn’t that Pacquiao was so great. It was a case of Barrios showing how poor of a fighter he is, and why he’s considered the weakest link at 147 of the champions at 147.

Pacquiao would have likely lost to most of the top 15 at welterweight last night. It’s just that he had a guy who lacked any real talent, and who has no business holding onto a world title.

Fans had already seen that in Barrio’s last fight when he battled to a 12-round draw against journeyman Abel Ramos last November.

Ramos was given a title shot against Barrios despite having lost two out of his last three fights. The matchmaking being done by Barrios’ promoters is a clear sign that they’re trying to keep him holding onto the WBC title for as long as possible.
