Technically this fight is a unification bout for all the marbles, every major alphabet title, The Ring Magazine championship, and a rightful claim to the lineage. In reality, however, this is more of a technicality. Canelo already was the undisputed king at 168, and he never lost the IBF belt in the ring. Canelo was stripped by the IBF of their belt, and Scull subsequently won the vacant belt when he won a unanimous decision against Vladimir Shishkin last October.
The IBF has a habit of ruining undisputed reigns. They did the same exact thing to Terence Crawford shortly after he became the first undisputed world welterweight champion in the modern 4-belt era, and they also pressured Oleksandr Usyk to the point that he vacated the IBF belt at heavyweight shortly after he became the first undisputed in that division during the modern 4-belt era. Beating Scull might technically make Canelo 2-time undisputed at 168, but Canel remains the king of the division going into the fight against Scull.
