“F*** Off To The Rehydration Clause?”: Carl Frampton’s Prediction On Eubank Jr.’s Next Move After Weight Miss Against Conor Benn

Carl Frampton predicts that Chris Eubank Jr. is going to blow off the 10-lb rehydration clause for Saturday morning and pay the fine rather than drain himself further for his fight against Conor Benn on April 26th.

Million-Dollar Fine

Eubank Jr. (34-3, 25 KOs) already missed weight today at Friday’s weigh-in, coming in at 160.05 lbs, and will have $500,000 deducted from his purse. The weight penalty for the 10-lb rehydration clause is $1 million. Neither fighter can weigh more than 170 lbs on Saturday morning, or else they will be fined $1 million.

Frampton believes that Eubank Jr. will simply accept the fine because he was badly drained today, having dropped down to 160. It would be difficult for him to withhold fluids and food overnight to keep his weight within the 170-lb limit.

Some believe that he went through a sauna to get down to 160.05 lbs today, which would have been hard on his body, given that he has a difficult fight ahead of him tomorrow night.

Weights

Chris Billiam-Smith 199 vs. Brandon Glanton 199.5
Cheavon Clarke 198.7 vs. Viddal Riley 199.5
Liam Smith 160 vs. Aaron McKenna 159.7
Anthony Yarde 174.2 vs. Lyndon Arthur 174.6
Chris Eubank Jr. 160.05 vs. Conor Benn 156.4
CHRIS EUBANK JR 160.05 lbs v CONOR BENN 156.4 lbs

“I imagine this is what happened. He’s weighed in on his own scales. He’s been bang on with his own scales, but there’s been a discrepancy between his own scales and the official’s scales,” said Carl Frampton to Boxing Social, giving his theory for why Chris Eubank Jr. came in overweight at today’s weigh-in for his fight with Conor Benn on Saturday night.

Given the huge $500,000 weight penalty, Eubank Jr. should have arrived a lot earlier at the weigh-in location to ensure that he was on target. Obviously, with the huge $10 million purse that he’s going to receive for his fight with Benn, he felt more than he would have if he weren’t getting that kind of dough.

Over The Limit

“Because he got to the weigh-in so late, there wasn’t enough time to get the rest of the remaining weight off. It’s hurting him, obviously getting down to 160. I think the [10-lb] rehydration clause could hurt him as well if he sticks to it, but I have a feeling he won’t,” said Frampton.

That sounds like a reasonable explanation for why Eubank Jr. missed weight. His scale at home read differently than the weigh-in scale, giving him a false sense of security. By the time he realized that he was still over by a significant amount of weight, it was too late to lose the remaining pounds before the weigh-in.

“It is a lot of money [$.1 million]. He already has to pay a big fine [$100,000] for the egg slap, and then missing the weight here [$500,000]. It was half an ounce of something or something insane,” said Frampton.  “A packet of Crisps in weight, but it’s like a $375 grand fine. I imagine he’s going to say, ‘F*** off to the rehydration clause’ and weigh in whatever he wants and pay another fine.

“When you’re getting $10 million for a fight, it’s a bit easier to pay them fines, isn’t it? You want to be in the best shape possible, and the rehydration clause isn’t allowing him to fuel up as he’d like. He’s never done it before; This is the thing. He’s never done one of these things.

“I’ve done it a few times as the IBF champion. It’s a difficult thing to do, and Eubank is a lot bigger than me. It was hard for me as a 122-lb fighter. It’s going to be a lot harder for Chris Eubank to stay within that limit,” said Frampton.
