Gabe Rosado believes that Jose Ramirez is “the wrong choice” for Devin Haney to come back against in his first fight in over a year, coming off a bad loss to Ryan Garcia on April 20th.
Rosado feels that the former WBC and WBO light welterweight champion Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs) is still fighting at a high level, despite his 10-round unanimous loss to Arnold Barboza Jr. on November 16th.
Confidence Concerns
Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) will be fighting Ramirez, 32, in the co-feature on the Ryan Garcia vs. Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero undercard on May 2nd at Times Square in New York City. The event will be shown live on DAZN PPV for $59.99.
What Gabe has doubts about with Haney is his confidence. He thinks that his self-belief is gone due to the way Ryan beat him up. He says that kind of loss could mess with his mind.
“I think Haney is the better fighter on paper, but Ramirez is the wrong choice to come back. I feel like Ramirez is powerful, he’s strong, and coming off that Barboza fight, he didn’t look horrible and he didn’t get beat bad,” said Gabe Rosado to Fight Hub TV about the Devin Haney vs. Jose Ramirez fight on May 2nd at Times Square in New York City.
Trust in Devin
Surprisingly, Bill Haney agreed to the choice of Jose Ramirez as Devin’s comeback opponent because this isn’t the typical opponent that he’d given the green light to. Bill has been careful in selecting opposition for Devin. When he fought good opposition, it was always with some advantage over them.
For example, when Haney fought Vasily Lomachenko, he looked two divisions heavier inside the ring, and he was much younger. Loma was 35 when he fought Devin, and competing three divisions above his natural weight class at featherweight.
Bill must have had no choice but for Devin to fight Jose Ramirez for him to get the big payday to fight on the May 2nd Fatal Fury card. There was already a mismatch in the main event between Ryan Garcia and Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero. So, the co-feature involving Haney needed to be a competitive 50-50 one because fans wouldn’t be interested in purchasing the event if all three fights were slanted in favor of the A-side fighter against ham & eggers.
Post-Loss Mindset
“I believe that was the perfect style for him to reassess what he did wrong and make the adjustments going into the fight with Haney. I think he has to make adjustments, and then we got to see where Haney’s mind is at if his confidence is even there,” said Rosado.
“Because it’s one thing to look good and be ripped, but where is confidence. I’ve never been hurt as bad as Haney has, but I can only imagine what that does to a fighter’s confidence. So, Haney has the ability to show us he’s a special fighter. So, this is his opportunity to show us, ‘I’m that dude.’ So, if he does that, my hat’s off to him,” said Gabe.
