Fatal Fury Battle: Robert Garcia Outlines Jose Ramirez’s Path To Victory, Targeting Devin Haney’s Vulnerabilities And Demanding Aggression

Trainer Robert Garcia says Jose Ramirez has got to have the “killer mentality for him to defeat Devin Haney on May 2nd in their 12-round co-feature bout on the Fatal Fury card at Times Square in New York City. Robert wants Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs) to return to how he used to fight when he was beating up his opponents.

Garcia says Ramirez didn’t looked good in his last fight, 10-round unanimous decision loss to Arnold Barboza Jr. on November 16th last year. Barboza outboxed him. Haney isn’t exceptionally as talented as him, but he’s close. He’s easier to hit, which could play in Jose’s favor.

Killer Mentality

“That’s what Jose [Ramirez] needs to do, and what he always did – beat the s*** out of his opponents,” said trainer Robert Garcia to Little Giant Boxing about wanting Jose Ramirez to beat up Devin Haney on May 2nd. “Jose already had that mentality. He didn’t have a great performance against Arnold [Barboza].”

Ramirez is going to have to be smart, and prepared to give Haney different looks inside the ring. If he fights the same way the entire contest, the former two-division world champion Devin will figure him out and dominate.

“We know Jose needs to be much better than that. He needs the killer mentality because in the ring, you have to try to kill people. That’s what boxing is. You’re opponent is trying to kill you. So, you’ve got to do the same. He’s got to go out there and be strong mentally,” said Robert.

Ramirez needs the “killer mentality” against Haney because if he doesn’t have it, he’ll be jabbed, clinched, and outboxed for 12 rounds like we saw with Regis Prograis in his loss to Dev. The style that works against Haney is the power one that Ryan Garcia and Jorge Linares used. Ramirez has the power to hurt Devin, but he’s got to figure out when he’s vulnerable and there to be hit.

Ryan took advantage of Haney’s habit of using a lot of clinching by hitting him with his short left hooks. Dev is likely to still use a lot of holding against Jose because it’s become too well ingrained for him to stop. It’s a habit now.

No Room for Loss

“This is the fight that will decide what happens next. I think Ryan-Haney, even if he loses, it’s still a big fight. Even if Haney loses to Jose, he can still go straight into a fight against Ryan because of what happened with the lawsuit. It would still do big numbers. People would still want to see it.

“This is a fight that Jose needs to win. The way he’s training, with the mentality that he has, with the motivation that he has, he has all the tools to beat him. Haney is a great fighter. We’ve got to see what Haney we get. If it’s a Haney that still has a lot of problems because of the beating he took, Jose has to take advantage of it. If he’s fresh and nothing is affecting him, then it’s going to be a solid fight,” said Robert.
